Players honored on that day from the Senior Team were: Chris Bongo, Harry Davis, Sully Deane, Trevor Fleischmann, Nick Foley, Ryan Healey, Will Judge, Brian Keser, Alex Kidd, Sam Law, Mike Leon, Josh Mainetti, Steve Paley and Chres Smith along with Coaches Mike Foley, Bill Fleischmann and Michael Fleischmann.
On Sunday, Sept. 20, Portland Little League honored the players who won the District 9 Championship titles this season. For the first time in Portland's baseball history two different age divisions simultaneously won the title not only in the same year but on the same evening, July 20, within 10 minutes of each other. This achievement was a tribute to how far Portland's Little League has come in coaching and playing ability in the past ten years.
Portland's Little League President Eric Peterson said "Winning both the Junior and Senior District 9 Championships in the same year is quite an accomplishment. Everyone associated with Portland's Little League is proud of our players and coaches and their dedication to their teams."
First Selectwoman Susan Bransfield was on hand to honor each player and coach with a "Certificate of Congratulations" from the Town of Portland in recognition of this momentous feat. She told the large crowd in attendance "We are all so proud of the Portland Little League baseball players and coaches. The whole Town of Portland congratulates them on winning their Divisional Championships. These young men are truly outstanding in their work performance, dedication and athletic abilities. Their accomplishments are amazing!"
Eric Peterson also made tribute of this special occasion with gifts to the players and coaches from the league and gave the opportunity for each of the teams Managers to recap the winning season's highlights. Manager Mike Foley of the Senior Division thanked his coaches Bill Fleischmann and Michael Fleischmann for coaching with him during the season and spoke about the unique playing ability of each player as he handed them trophies. Manager of the Junior Division Joe Bordonaro Jr. also thanked his assistant coaches Scott Ryan and Andre Paradis along with each of his players, recounting the skills of each member as he also awarded them with trophies.
More than 100 family and friends attended the ceremony excited to be a part of their son's or grandson's special celebration. Joe Bordonaro Sr. along with wife Marie noted that he had hardly missed any of his grandson's games especially since his son coached the junior team and was thrilled to be part of this celebration along with numerous other relatives. Ralph and Sara Paley whose son-in-law and grandson coached the senior team were there to celebrate with notable pride two grandson's victories. Of the thirty players honored that day Ryan Healey, Trevor Fleischmann and Steven Paley of the Senior Champions were noted as three time winners from their divisional wins in 2004, 2007 and now in 2009. Portland has come a long way in being competitive in the past five years in both baseball and softball giving much bigger towns a run for their money which is attributed to the support and dedication from the league's board and all they provide to the players and coaches.
